A South Pole Ice Telescope Wins Francis Halzen the Nobel
At 82, University of Wisconsin–Madison physicist Francis Halzen won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for IceCube. At the South Pole, IceCube uses a cubic kilometre of ice and sensors to catch rare neutrino flashes. The particles carry clues about violent events in space. Researchers will use the observatory to investigate their cosmic sources.

A cubic kilometre of Antarctic ice, threaded with thousands of light sensors, has become a telescope for particles that usually pass straight through Earth. On October 6, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences gave University of Wisconsin–Madison physicist Francis Halzen the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics. The prize recognized his work on IceCube and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos from space.1631
IceCube began with an idea Halzen put forward in 1988: use the South Pole’s ice to spot faint light made when a neutrino rarely hits an atom. He helped lead an international team that built the observatory, completed in 2011. Researchers soon found high-energy neutrinos and later confirmed that some came from beyond our solar system.1328 Halzen told the Nobel committee by phone from Italy that the prize surprised him. He also hoped it would help win approval for a proposal he was working on.6
Those rare flashes matter because neutrinos can travel across space carrying clues from violent events without changing course or being blocked, as many other particles are. IceCube gives scientists another way to study the universe’s most energetic places, including the sources of high-energy particles that can reach far beyond anything made in Earth laboratories.1025 The observatory does not yet explain every source. Its ongoing measurements may help researchers find where these particles come from and reveal cosmic events they have not recognized before.2728
Those ongoing measurements are the next step in the work Halzen’s Nobel recognizes. The Academy said IceCube will keep collecting neutrino interactions, giving researchers new information about where they occur and a chance to find unknown phenomena.127 Halzen also credited the people who took part in the risky project, saying he hoped the prize would reflect their courage. IceCube, rather than one discovery alone, is the lasting tool the award celebrates.32
