Abdul El-Sayed Wins Michigan, Making Senate History
The 44-year-old Democrat beat Republican Mike Rogers by six points, becoming the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate. El-Sayed said voters chose a campaign focused on affordability, health care and money in politics, despite attacks on his faith and identity. He will take office in January and serve a six-year term.
“Michigan, we did it!” Abdul El-Sayed told cheering supporters after winning the state’s Senate race. The Democrat beat Republican Mike Rogers by six points, according to a report on his victory. That made him the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate. For El-Sayed, the win brought more than a seat in Congress: it answered a question about whether Michigan would elect a liberal Muslim who faced open attacks on his faith. 23
That six-point margin followed a campaign El-Sayed said was shaped by issues that hit daily life: gas, groceries and access to a doctor. The former public health official argued that voters wanted action on affordability and a check on President Donald Trump’s policies. He also accused Rogers’s campaign of focusing on his name and religion rather than those concerns. El-Sayed said outside groups spent hundreds of millions of dollars trying to defeat him. 10
Those attacks made the win a test of how far anti-Muslim messages could travel in a state divided by politics and culture. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani praised El-Sayed’s victory, citing the racism, slander and money directed against him. In Dearborn, where Muslim residents made up a large share of voters, unofficial results showed El-Sayed winning more than 82 percent of the vote, against nearly 17 percent for Rogers. The result gives Democrats a new senator, while the campaign leaves questions about how his opponents will respond to his policy goals. 48
That new seat also links Michigan to a family story thousands of kilometres away. El-Sayed’s wife, Sarah Jukaku, has family roots in Bhatkal, Karnataka; relatives there celebrated his victory. Her grandfather, Jukaku Shamshuddin, was a Mysore government minister and helped bring services such as electricity to the town, according to reports. El-Sayed is due to be sworn in by Vice President JD Vance in January. He now faces the work of turning his campaign promises into laws in the Senate. 212
