Akoijam Gets Protection From Arrest Until November 5
Rouse Avenue Court barred coercive action against Congress MP and Jawaharlal Nehru University professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam until November 5. The case follows complaints from 11 students alleging sexual harassment; Akoijam denies the allegations. At the November 5 hearing, the judge will review the police response and case file before considering the plea.

Until November 5, Delhi Police cannot arrest Congress MP and Jawaharlal Nehru University professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam or take other forceful action against him. A Rouse Avenue court gave him temporary protection on Tuesday while asking police to respond to his request for anticipatory bail. The court also ordered the investigating officer to bring the case file to the next hearing. 12
The November 5 hearing follows a dispute over which court should hear the request. Akoijam first sought anticipatory bail at Patiala House Court, which said the Rouse Avenue Court handles cases involving sitting MPs. He then moved his request. His lawyer told the court that Akoijam had received temporary bail protection in Manipur, later gained temporary protection in Delhi, and had joined the police investigation.45 Anticipatory bail lets someone ask a court for protection from arrest before an arrest happens.
The allegations concern Akoijam’s work as a professor at JNU. At least 11 students made complaints in May, alleging sexual harassment, including unwelcome conduct at gatherings and inappropriate remarks. JNU’s internal committee investigated and recommended discipline; the university dismissed him on October 9. Akoijam denies the allegations and has called them politically motivated. Delhi Police opened a case, and its investigation is ongoing.136 The court’s order gives temporary protection; it does not decide whether the allegations are true or whether he will receive anticipatory bail.
The university dismissal is also being challenged. On November 2, the Delhi High Court paused JNU’s dismissal order and asked the university to respond, with the matter set for January 2027. Akoijam argued that he was dismissed without notice or a chance to respond; JNU’s order cited its committee’s findings and disciplinary process.913 The next immediate step is the November 5 hearing, when the Rouse Avenue judge will consider the police response and decide what happens to the bail request.
