Bikaner House Removes 74 Protest Photos From Raihan Vadra Show
About 74 photographs were removed from artist Raihan Vadra’s exhibition after Bikaner House management said it was the wrong time to show protest images. Vadra says the pictures documented Delhi demonstrations and that he was given a short deadline to take them down. His exhibition is scheduled to open Thursday and run through Sunday.

Nails showed through on the red walls at Bikaner House after about 74 photographs came down from artist Raihan Vadra’s exhibition. The images showed Delhi protests, and their removal left two rooms largely bare before his show opened. Vadra says the venue warned him it could cancel the exhibition if he did not remove them. 13
Those 74 photographs were part of “No Idea Is Final,” a solo show combining protest images with wildlife, abstract and street photography. Vadra said he had shared his exhibition plan with Bikaner House managers in advance. On Wednesday afternoon, he said, the managers gave him until 5 pm to remove the images, telling him it was not the right time to show them. The venue is a cultural space in New Delhi run by the Rajasthan government. Its managers declined to comment through an official, according to PTI. 156
That short deadline has turned a dispute over what belongs in an exhibition into a public debate about artistic freedom. Vadra says the photographs record events rather than promote a political message, and that all art carries political meaning. He also said staff removed a photograph of the Indian flag; reports differ on whether he later put it back or refused a request to remove two flag images. Congress leaders, including his mother, Lok Sabha member Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, called the removal censorship. Their claims do not show why the venue acted, and Bikaner House has not publicly explained its decision. 369
The immediate result is a smaller show, with around 40 works still on display. Vadra said he would look for another venue for the full collection if needed. “No Idea Is Final” is scheduled to open Thursday, October 22, and run through Sunday, October 25, leaving the removed photographs’ next public showing uncertain. 58
