Delhi Police Arrest Amir Shokeen in Tripura Harassment Case

Police found influencer Amir Shokeen at a relative’s home in Karol Bagh and arrested him on Thursday, Delhi Police said. Earlier, officers traced him to Shahdara, but he moved before Sadar Bazar Police caught him with help from technical surveillance. The arrest followed a viral video alleging racial harassment of a young man from Tripura, which sparked public anger. ^2,4

The video, reportedly uploaded on September 19 and widely shared on October 21, allegedly shows Shokeen making racial remarks and humiliating the young man in Delhi. A complaint from the Tripura Students Forum Delhi described alleged sexual assault, harassment and degrading treatment. It asked police to safely identify the victim and preserve the recording and other online evidence. Delhi Police registered a case under four Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections covering provocation, promoting hatred, intentional insult and public mischief. Tripura Police also registered a case and sent a team to Delhi. ^6,8

Those allegations have resonated beyond the people shown in the video. The forum says slurs targeting someone’s perceived ethnic or regional identity demean that person and the wider Tripura community. Its members have also called for action to prevent repeated racial harassment of people from Northeast India. Investigators have yet to examine the claims. Shokeen previously apologised and said the video was scripted, that he knew the man, and that he intended it as humour. ^6,12

That disputed account now sits alongside an active police investigation. Delhi Police named four BNS sections in the case, while Tripura Police are working with them and say they have identified the victim and are in touch with him. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha have called for action. Police must now examine the video and related evidence as they investigate the allegations. ^2,14
