India’s Bowlers Hold Firm to Put West Indies Behind
India defended 223 to beat the West Indies team by 14 runs and take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. India opener Abhishek Sharma made 69 from 30 balls; fast bowler Arshdeep Singh took three wickets in the team’s 209-7. On October 14 in Hyderabad, India can seal the series; West Indies need victory.

India’s bowlers had to defend 223 at Indore’s batter-friendly Holkar Stadium. They held West Indies to 209-7, winning by 14 runs to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. The win also ended a run in which the team batting second had won every game on the tour. The turning point came early in the chase: fast bowler Arshdeep Singh bowled West Indies captain Shai Hope for five. Hope had hit an unbeaten 102 in the previous match.16
Arshdeep’s early wicket gave India room to respond when Shimron Hetmyer attacked, scoring 43 from 26 balls. India opener Abhishek Sharma had already set the pace with 69 from 30 deliveries, including five sixes. He shared a 108-run stand with Ishan Kishan, who made 37. West Indies spinner Roston Chase then dismissed Kishan and India captain Shreyas Iyer in the same over. Abhishek fell soon after, and India’s middle order lost wickets quickly. Late runs lifted the total to 223 all out.16
That total mattered because West Indies had just chased 250 to level the series, making another successful chase seem possible. This time, India’s bowlers stopped the visitors from building a lasting partnership. Spinner Naman Dhir removed Hetmyer and opener Kamil Pooran, who scored 42. Arshdeep later bowled Sherfane Rutherford, who had made 32. The result showed how much defending a total can matter in a fast-scoring format: India’s lead is back, but West Indies remain close enough to threaten it.12
Arshdeep finished with three wickets for 44 runs, while Dhir took two. India also became the first team on the tour to win after batting first, in conditions where the dew that can help chasing batters did not arrive. The teams meet again in Hyderabad on Wednesday, October 14. India can seal the series with a win; West Indies need one to keep it alive.67
