India’s NVS-03 Satellite Reaches Orbit, Boosting NavIC
India’s space agency ISRO placed NVS-03 in intended orbit after GSLV-F18 launched at 11:51 pm on October 30. NavIC, India’s regional navigation system, had lost standalone positioning capability. NVS-03 carries an indigenous atomic clock and adds the L1 signal. ISRO must raise it to its assigned position and commission it before NavIC can provide service.

At 11:51 pm on October 30, ISRO’s GSLV-F18 lifted off from Sriharikota. Less than half an hour later, the space agency reported that the rocket had placed NVS-03 in its intended orbit. The successful deployment clears a key hurdle for a satellite meant to help India restore its own navigation service. 13
That orbit is the start, not the end, of NVS-03’s journey. The satellite will use its onboard propulsion system to move from its transfer orbit toward its assigned position. It is the third satellite in ISRO’s second-generation NavIC series, and the GSLV flight was the programme’s 20th. NVS-03 carries an Indian-made atomic clock alongside purchased clocks, and adds the L1 signal to NavIC’s existing L5 and S-band signals. 34
Those new features matter because satellite and clock failures had weakened NavIC. Before this launch, three satellites were providing location, navigation and timing services, leaving the system unable to provide location services on its own. NavIC covers India and a region about 1,500 kilometres beyond its borders, and supports uses from transport and sea navigation to disaster response. Unlike global GPS, it gives India a navigation system it can run independently. 59
That independent service is not restored simply because NVS-03 reached orbit. ISRO must move the satellite into its assigned position, put it into service and check its signals before the system can provide the intended service. NVS-02, launched in January 2025, failed to reach its final orbit after a propulsion problem, so ISRO changed how NVS-03’s propulsion valves are activated to address that issue. 39
Questions about this story
How far beyond India does NavIC cover?▾
NavIC is designed to cover India and a region extending about 1,500 kilometres beyond its borders. 3
Why did India develop its own navigation system?▾
The 1999 Kargil conflict highlighted the risk of relying on foreign navigation information that might not be available when needed. India developed NavIC to maintain an independent source of positioning and timing. 5
What went wrong with the previous satellite?▾
NVS-02 reached an initial transfer orbit in January 2025, but a propulsion-system issue prevented it from reaching its intended orbit. ISRO changed the activation of NVS-03’s propulsion valves to avoid a repeat. 3
