Jailer 2 Opens With Rs 125.25 Crore Worldwide

With Rs 125.25 crore worldwide in one day, Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 ranks among the biggest Tamil film openings ever. Trade tracker Sacnilk estimates the sequel took Rs 70.25 crore in gross sales in India and Rs 55 crore overseas on Thursday, October 15. The figures are early estimates, not final totals, but they show audiences turned out in force for the film’s first day. ^7,11

Those Rs 70.25 crore in Indian sales came mostly from Tamil-language screenings, which earned Rs 43.35 crore net. Telugu screenings added Rs 12.50 crore, Hindi Rs 3.50 crore and Kannada Rs 35 lakh, according to Sacnilk. The film opened across 16,599 shows in four languages. Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer from the 2023 hit, with Nelson Dilipkumar directing again. The first film earned more than Rs 600 crore worldwide. ^10,14

The Rs 55 crore from overseas markets made up nearly 44 per cent of the sequel’s worldwide opening. It helped the film pass the Rs 100 crore mark on day one. Its reported total puts it behind Coolie, at about Rs 151 crore, and Leo, at about Rs 143 crore, among Tamil cinema’s biggest worldwide openers. The Hindi start was more limited: reports say major North Indian multiplex chains did not screen the film amid a dispute over the digital release window. Figures vary across reports, so rankings depend on which measure is used. ^1,11,18

The opening also matters to theatres seeking films that can keep audiences coming through the doors. In Kerala, exhibitors put the first-day gross at about Rs 12.65 crore, a record for a Tamil film there, and said some cinemas ran shows for 18 hours. The extended holiday period may help keep attendance up. The next clear test is the weekend’s box office, which will show whether Jailer 2 can hold its strong start. ^4,16
