More Than 146,000 Taiwan Homes Still Without Power
A newly reported outage figure puts more than 146,000 Taiwanese households without electricity after Champi’s winds and rain damaged power lines. Crews are repairing the network after the storm cut power to hundreds of thousands of homes. Champi is weakening, but rough seas and heavy rain still threaten parts of Taiwan.

More than 146,000 households in Taiwan were still without electricity, according to a new outage figure. The number shows the storm’s lasting effects as Champi weakens and repair crews work to restore power. Earlier reports said more than 288,000 homes had lost power, with many already reconnected36.
The outages began as Champi swept past Taiwan’s northeast on Friday and Saturday, bringing fierce winds, heavy rain and flooding. The storm circled offshore near Yilan County after passing close to the coast, knocking down trees and power lines and sending roof tiles flying. Taiwan’s fire department reported one death and 527 injuries. The transport ministry said 259 flights were cancelled, down from almost 1,000 on Friday6.
The 146,000 households still waiting for power are part of a wider recovery. More than 5,000 people were evacuated, and shops in northern and central Taiwan stayed shut for a second day. Crews from other regions joined repair work in the north13. Champi’s weakening does not mean the danger has ended. Taiwan’s weather agency warned that waves could exceed six metres in northern and northeastern waters, while heavy rain remained possible in some areas3.
Those rough seas also matter beyond Taiwan. Champi was moving north toward China’s coast, with a forecast path eventually taking it toward southern Japan. Chinese authorities warned of strong winds and heavy rain along the eastern coast6. Taiwan’s weather agency expected to lift land and sea typhoon warnings by Saturday evening. But local crews still had to restore power, and residents had to heed remaining rain and sea warnings3.
