Nearly 800 People Leave Oleshky as Five-Day Truce Ends
The five-day pause helped nearly 800 people leave Oleshky, while aid reached residents trapped by fighting. US First Lady Melania Trump said the mission ended as planned on November 1, after Russian and Ukrainian officials worked together to open routes and move civilians. Ukraine and Russia are now considering similar aid efforts.

Nearly 800 people were able to leave Oleshky during a five-day ceasefire that ended November 1, US First Lady Melania Trump said. The pause also allowed aid to reach the Russian-held town in Ukraine’s Kherson region. Trump praised both sides for working together and said she hoped the mission could help build lasting peace. For residents, the agreement offered a rare break from attacks and a way out. 1
The agreement began on October 27 after talks between Ukrainian human rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets and Russian human rights commissioner Yana Lantratova, with Trump helping mediate. The sides cleared mines from roads, delivered food, clean water and medicine, and moved civilians along safe routes. Ukraine’s military separately reported evacuating 167 people from threatened parts of the region, including 22 children and 21 people with limited mobility. Those figures describe a reported evacuation mission, while Trump’s figure of nearly 800 covers the broader Oleshky operation. 12
The 167 people included children and residents needing extra help, a reminder that the pause was more than a diplomatic gesture. Oleshky sits near the front line, across the Dnipro River from Ukrainian-held Kherson, where residents also had a short break from the usual attacks. But the truce was limited and temporary; its end does not mean the danger has passed. Ukrainian forces said they remained ready for fighting to resume, while Russian and Ukrainian officials described the aid work as successful. 379
The end of the ceasefire leaves the two countries with a tested, if narrow, way to coordinate aid and civilian movement. Lubinets said the sides were exploring whether similar efforts could continue, and Lantratova proposed making such missions a regular arrangement. That next step depends on both governments agreeing to another pause and keeping routes safe. For now, the Oleshky mission has delivered aid and evacuated civilians, but it has not ended the war. 23
