Pinglu Canal opens with wildlife bridge, reshaping southwest China trade

A 240 meter wildlife bridge arches over the Pinglu Canal as ships glide below, a striking sign of how a new route can coexist with nature⁷. The Pinglu Canal opened to navigation on September 16, 2026, after four years of work and a 72.7 billion yuan price tag, linking Nanning in Guangxi to the Beibu Gulf and cutting inland journeys by more than 560 kilometers^7,20,23.

The canal is designed for vessels up to 5,000 tonnes and forms a key link in the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, intended to move goods from inland China toward ASEAN markets and beyond^2,13,33.

In Madao and Qinzhou, engineers added wildlife friendly features such as rock piles, pits, and native trees to the overpass and surrounding habitat, aiming to reduce ecological disruption while expanding trade routes^7,6.

The opening also brings new port and logistics opportunities, with the Beibu Gulf port network expected to gain traffic and the western regions promised a boost to investment and connectivity, including plans to develop gateway ports and related intermodal links^14,16,20.
