Silver Briefly Breaks Below $50 as Prices Keep Falling
The metal briefly dropped below $50 an ounce on October 30, its first dip under that mark since November 2025. Higher oil prices, strong US growth and inflation worries have revived concern about another Federal Reserve rate rise. Traders now watch whether buyers defend the $50 area and whether the Fed raises rates in December.

For a moment on October 30, silver fell below $50 an ounce for the first time since November 2025. It later recovered slightly, trading around $50.50 in early New York trade, but the drop extended a sharp slide from above $53 the day before. The metal has lost more than half its value since its January peak above $121. 3
That drop followed a week of losses across precious metals. In New Delhi, silver fell Rs 8,300 to Rs 1,90,200 per kilogram, while gold dropped Rs 1,300 to Rs 1,45,200 per 10 grams. In global trading, silver fell about 4% to $50.12 an ounce, and gold slipped below $4,000.5 Strong US growth and inflation have raised concerns that the Federal Reserve could raise rates in December, despite holding them steady this week. 810
Those rate worries matter because silver pays no interest, so higher rates can make bonds more appealing. Oil prices have also stayed high amid concerns about Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, adding to inflation fears. But silver has another weak point: factories and solar makers use it, and analysts say weaker investment demand, efforts to save materials, and replacement materials are easing pressure on supply. London vaults held 932 million ounces at September’s end, with about 267 million freely available. 24
That larger stockpile makes another immediate supply squeeze less likely, but it does not mean prices will stop falling. Chart watchers see the $50 to $49.42 area as possible support; a sustained break below $49.42 could lead to further losses.9 The next clear policy marker is the Federal Reserve’s December 9 meeting, when investors will learn whether the feared rate increase happens. 9
Questions about this story
Why can strong growth hurt silver prices?▾
What is easing pressure on silver supplies?▾
London vaults held 932 million ounces at September’s end, including about 267 million ounces freely available outside physically backed funds. Analysts also point to weaker investment demand and efforts to use less silver or replace it. 4
What price level could signal further losses?▾
One technical analysis identifies $49.42 as the bottom of a possible support zone. A confirmed break below it would favour further downside, while the analysis names $54 as the first key resistance on a rebound. 9
