Iran Says It Shot Down US Drone Over Qeshm
Iran’s army says it destroyed a US-made MQ-9 Reaper over Qeshm Island using what it called a new system. US President Donald Trump confirmed limited strikes; Iranian state media reported two projectiles. The Strait carries oil traffic, and Qatar says negotiations remain active; continued talks are the test of efforts to prevent wider fighting.

Iran’s army says it brought down a US-made MQ-9 Reaper over Qeshm Island with what it called a new system. The claim adds a new military flashpoint near the already tense Strait of Hormuz, where President Donald Trump has acknowledged US strikes on Iranian air defences. Iran has not provided evidence that the drone was destroyed, and the US has not confirmed its reported loss. 34
The drone claim followed reports in Iranian state media that two projectiles struck the Suza area of Qeshm on Friday. Trump said US forces had knocked out a recently built anti-aircraft system, calling the action “minor,” but gave no exact location or details linking it to the projectiles. On Monday, the US military also reported defensive strikes on Qeshm and nearby areas. The island sits beside the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow route for major oil and gas shipments. 13
The waterway is already under strain. A UK maritime monitoring group counted 11 attacks on ships in and around the strait during the week ending November 6, with three vessels sinking. Ship crossings were about 65 percent below pre-war levels. Iran’s military said a tanker caught fire after hitting a mine, but Washington disputes this and says the mines have been cleared. Each new strike or disputed report raises risks for crews, shipping and energy supplies. 4
The military claims come as efforts continue to keep the conflict from widening. Trump says talks with Tehran have made progress, while Qatar, which is mediating, says negotiations remain active and denies reports they collapsed. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called for regional security arrangements without outside powers. The next test is whether the US and Iran keep talking while Qatar’s mediation continues. 1612
