Zelenskyy Reports Fresh Strikes as Dnipro Toll Hits 14
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Russian strikes on three cities killed 19 people and injured 56, including 10 children. The attacks hit a crowded railway platform in Dnipro, homes in Kremenchuk and a residential area in Chernihiv. Zelenskyy called for stronger pressure on Russia as diplomatic efforts continue. US-mediated peace talks are expected in November.
A crowded platform in Dnipro became the deadliest of three scenes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as fresh Russian attacks on civilians. The railway strike killed 14 people, while strikes in Chernihiv and Kremenchuk killed five more. Zelenskyy said 56 people were injured across the three attacks, including 10 children, and called the strikes deliberate. 12
The 14 deaths followed a jet-powered drone strike on Dnipro’s main station, where trains were waiting, including a commuter service bound for Zaporizhzhia. Ukraine’s state railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, said it had issued a heightened danger warning, but passengers remained on the platform. In Kremenchuk, a drone hit an apartment building, killing three people and injuring 15. In Chernihiv, a drone attack killed two 15-year-old girls. 128
The three attacks came amid ongoing efforts to ease the war. Zelenskyy said Russia’s actions showed it wanted the fighting to continue and urged other countries to increase pressure. French President Emmanuel Macron also condemned the Dnipro strike and called for stronger diplomatic efforts. Moscow denies deliberately targeting civilians. The attacks also highlight the danger facing Ukraine’s rail network, which people rely on for travel and which has faced repeated drone threats. In September, passengers were evacuated from more than 5,800 train services because of those threats. 236
The next test is whether diplomacy can make progress while attacks continue. Ukraine, Russia and the United States are expected to hold peace talks in November, according to earlier remarks by Zelenskyy. Meanwhile, the local ceasefire around Oleshky is meant to allow aid deliveries and civilian evacuations, not to stop fighting across Ukraine. Macron and Zelenskyy are urging international partners to push for a broader end to the fighting. 36
